Sacramento County Sheriff Scott Jones (R) today said he will challenge two-term Rep. Ami Bera (D-Calif.) in 2016 to represent a very competitive congressional district that covers the eastern suburbs of Sacramento. Bera beat his Republican challenger in 2014 by just 1,455 votes.

“Today, I am announcing my candidacy for United States Congress for California’s Seventh Congressional District,” Jones said at a news conference. Invoking the recent terror attacks in Paris, Jones also said: “We are letting the terrorists march on, to win this war on terrorism, placing every American at risk, every single day, because it seems like no one has the courage to change it. Well, I do.”
