Cameras in hand, tourists and locals alike swamped Washington, D.C., last weekend to witness the blooming of cherry trees along the tidal basin. Besides being absurdly picturesque, “peak bloom” symbolizes the release of winter in the capital region.
The trees were gifted to Washington by the mayor of Tokyo in 1912.
