Former President Donald Trump announced his new social media platform TRUTH Social last week, and more than 60 percent of Republicans expect to use it when it launches, according to a new Morning Consult/Politico poll.

What the numbers say

  • Sixty-three percent of those who voted for Trump in the 2020 election said they will use the site at least some of the time.
  • The platform does not appear to have wide appeal, as only 15 percent of all voters said they will use it a lot.
  • Democrats appear to be especially unimpressed, as 72 percent said they would not use it at all. Of those who voted for President Joe Biden in 2020, 76 percent said they will not use it at all.
  • TRUTH Social has more public backing than Trump’s last social media venture, “From the Desk of Donald J. Trump.” Twenty-nine percent of all voters and 50 percent of Republicans said they would engage with that platform in a poll earlier this year.

Background on Trump’s social media efforts

Trump said last week that he created TRUTH Social to “stand up to the tyranny of Big Tech.” Twitter Inc. banned Trump and Facebook Inc. suspended him from their platforms for violating their rules after the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol.

An apparent beta version of the new site has already been hacked and accused of violating software rules.

The survey was conducted Oct. 22-24, 2021, among 1,999 registered voters and has a margin of error of 2 percentage points.
