Ryan Calls Trump’s Judge Comments Racist, Still Backs Him

House Speaker Paul Ryan on Tuesday rolled out the House GOP’s plan to fight poverty, but his first question from reporters was predictably about Donald Trump’s race-based comments on the judge presiding over the Trump University case.

“Claiming someone can’t do a job because of their race is sort of like the textbook definition of a racist comment,” the Wisconsin Republican said at an event in Anacostia, a Washington, D.C., neighborhood. “I think that should be absolutely disavowed, it’s totally unacceptable.”

However, Ryan said he’s still backing the bombastic businessman for the White House over the presumptive Democratic nominee, Hillary Clinton.

“I believe we have more common ground on the policy issues of the day, and we have more likelihood of getting our policies enacted with him than we do with her,” Ryan said. “At the end of the day, this is about ideas. This is about moving our agenda forward and that’s why we’re moving the way we’re moving.”
