Week in Review


  • The National Football League players who are kneeling during the national anthem as a protest against racial injustice have impacted the NFL’s brand, with U.S. adults more likely to view the NFL unfavorably (44 percent) than favorably (35 percent), according to a Morning Consult survey.

Tech companies

  • Google Inc. unveiled a number of hardware products, including a virtual reality headset, smart speakers and wireless headphones and a wireless camera. The company also waded into the augmented reality world with the debut of AR apps and stickers that are compatible with much of its new hardware.
  • Inc. is testing its own delivery service in the United States, services that are now provided by longtime partners United Parcel Service Inc. and FedEx Corp.

Reputational matters

  • A New York Times investigation uncovered previously undisclosed allegations of sexual harassment against Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein. A lawyer advising Weinstein said that many of the accusations are “patently false.”
  • The Dannon Company Inc. broke its ties with Carolina Panthers football player Cam Newton after he told a female reporter during a press conference that it was “funny” to hear a woman ask technical questions about sports.

  • Leading brand executives will be meeting in Chicago on Oct. 11-13 at the Brandstat conference. Attendees include Tracy Harlow, vice president of digital strategy and brand engagement at Wal-Mart Stores Inc., and Gregg Heard, vice president of brand identity at AT&T Inc.
  • The Public Relations Society of America’s International Conference in Boston on Oct. 8-10 will focus on the intersection of technology and media. The Oscar-nominated filmmaker Morgan Spurlock will open the conference as the keynote speaker.
