Week in Review

Endeavor

  • WME parent Endeavor Group Holdings Inc. is set to pay roughly $660 million to acquire high-end events business On Location Experiences, according to people familiar with the matter, who said the NFL is expected to increase its stake in the company to 20 percent. Endeavor’s reported purchase of On Location, which has deals with music festivals and major sporting events such as the Ryder Cup and the Super Bowl, comes after Endeavor canceled an initial public offering in September.

Disney+

  • Walt Disney Co. is pushing up the premiere date of its “WandaVision” Disney+ title from 2021 to 2020, where it will now debut alongside fellow Marvel original “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.” This year will also feature the second season of “The Mandalorian,” the return of Hilary Duff as “Lizzie McGuire” and an unscripted Muppets series called “Muppets Now.”
  • Several titles have already disappeared from the Disney+ library, less than two months after launch, including “Home Alone,” “Home Alone 2,” “The Sandlot” and “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.” While classics from the Disney Vault are likely to remain on the streaming platform permanently, sources attributed the removal of some content to likely issues with legacy deals and predicted the films could return to Disney+ once the previous licenses expire.

Streaming

  • Justin Bieber’s new docuseries, “Justin Bieber: Seasons,” cost YouTube upward of $20 million in total, according to people familiar with the terms of the deal, which would make it the video streaming platform’s most expensive original content acquisition. The reported cost of the 10-part series, set to premiere Jan. 27, is roughly on par with Billie Eilish’s recent deal with Apple Inc., which sources said cost about $25 million.
  • Former HBO Chief Executive Richard Plepler signed a five-year deal with Apple Inc. to produce feature films, documentaries and television programs for Apple TV+ through his new company, Eden Productions, just 10 months after stepping down as head of the premium cable network following AT&T Inc.’s acquisition of Time Warner. The move from Plepler, who worked at HBO for 27 years and saw the network win more than 160 Emmys while he was at the helm, comes as WarnerMedia prepares to debut its own streaming service, HBO Max, later this year.

#MeToo

  • Former PBS talk show host Tavis Smiley faces decades of sexual misconduct allegations, according to a newly unsealed report from an external investigator hired by the broadcaster, including claims that he pressured one employee to disclose her bra size and offered to buy her underwear, had one woman fired after others discovered his consensual relationship with her, grabbed another woman by the buttocks and answered the door to his home without wearing pants. According to the report, Smiley denied the allegations, saying that he has never disciplined or fired an employee for having sex with him, and that he did not say “anything generally misogynistic about women.”

What’s Ahead

  • The Golden Globes, hosted by Ricky Gervais, will air tonight at 8 p.m. EST on NBC. A Morning Consult/The Hollywood Reporter poll shows that “Joker” is the most-viewed of the best picture nominees.
  • The Consumer Technology Association’s CES conference will start Tuesday and go through Friday. The industry showcase includes keynotes from Quibi heads Meg Whitman and Jeffrey Katzenberg and NBCUniversal.
  • Nomination voting for the Oscars ends Tuesday, with nominations set to be announced Monday, Jan. 13.
