Welcome back to the Sunday newsletter!

“Spider-Man: No Way Home,” the latest film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, hits theaters in just under two weeks. Marvel Studios’ has raked in big money at the box office in recent years, and its two 2021 releases — “Black Widow” and “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” — are two of the highest grossing films of this year. Today, Marvel’s dominance is obvious, but changing consumer habits could still present a challenge for the franchise in the future.

Tomorrow, Morning Consult will launch a nine-part series looking at the business future of the MCU, written by myself and brands reporter Alyssa Meyers, but in the meantime, let’s highlight some new Morning Consult data from the cutting-room floor to settle a pop-culture debate: Who is America’s favorite Chris? According to polling, Chris Hemsworth and Chris Pratt are basically tied, with favorability ratings of 56 percent and 55 percent, respectively. Chris Evans ranked third at 48 percent (sorry, Captain America fans).

Additionally, our new Morning Consult Global newsletter, written by geopolitics reporter Matthew Kendrick, a former producer for CNN’s “Fareed Zakaria GPS,” launches on Monday. Fueled by our proprietary research data, original reporting and analysis, Morning Consult Global will put economic and world events into context, giving you unique insight into today’s complex business environment. If you’re interested in subscribing, please click here.

And now, before we look to the week ahead, here’s a trivia question: What streaming service was the fastest growing brand of this year, per Morning Consult’s Fastest Growing Brands report?

A: Disney+ B: Paramount+ C: HBO Max D: Discovery+

Check out the answer at the bottom of today’s newsletter.

Week in Review

  • CNN fired anchor Chris Cuomo after a report from the office of the New York attorney general revealed he counseled his brother, former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, during his sexual harassment scandal. Lawyer Debra S. Katz told CNN last week that a former junior colleague at another network alleged sexual misconduct against Chris, though it was unclear what role the allegation had in the anchor’s dismissal.
  • The Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office authorized a search of Seth Kenney’s PDQ Arm & Prop LLC, looking for equipment related to the shooting of Halyna Hutchins on the set of “Rust” after the film’s armorer, Hannah Gutierrez Reed, identified Kenney as the supplier of the ammunition on set. Gutierrez Reed said she added an additional round to the weapon after cleaning it, but her lawyer said she wasn’t aware it was a live round.
  • Alec Baldwin said Hutchins was instructing him on how to position a prop gun in the moments before she was shot and killed, but stated that he did not pull the trigger and that the gun was discharged when he let go of its hammer, events that were corroborated by first assistant director Dave Halls’ attorney. Mary Carmack-Altwies, district attorney for New Mexico’s First Judicial District, said she is still “exploring various legal theories” and could press charges in Hutchins’ death, despite Baldwin telling ABC News it was “highly unlikely” that he’d face criminal charges.
  • Susan Arnold will replace Bob Iger as chairman of Walt Disney Co. when Iger departs the company on Dec. 31, becoming the first woman to serve as its chairman.
  • Dr. Mehmet Oz is running for US Senate in Pennsylvania as a Republican. The surgeon and TV personality previously served on the Presidential Council on Sports, Fitness and Nutrition during the Trump administration.
  • Twitter Chief Executive Jack Dorsey resigned from his role with the company after 15 years and will step down from the company’s board in May. The company replaced Dorsey with Chief Technology Officer Parag Agrawal.
