Week in Review

COVID-19

  • As many schools prepare to start a new academic year, the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Children’s Hospital Association released a report that found that more than 97,000 U.S. children tested positive for COVID-19 in the last two weeks of July, bringing the total number of cases among children to 338,982 as of July 30.
  • The World Health Organization released guidance recommending that dental patients postpone their routine oral health checkups, dental cleanings and other preventive care in order to curb the spread of COVID-19 at dental offices. The WHO said “frequent exposure to saliva, blood, and other body fluids” puts dental workers at risk of contracting COVID-19, though the organization noted that urgent dental care and emergencies are exceptions to its guidance.

Vaccines

  • Russian President Vladimir Putin said his country is the first to approve an experimental COVID-19 vaccine, a claim that is drawing criticism from outside scientists who say a vaccine that has been rushed through development and approval could be harmful to people or provide them with a false sense of security about being protected from infection.

What’s Ahead

  • The Senate and House are scheduled to be in state and district work periods, respectively, through Labor Day.
  • The Brookings Institution is hosting a webinar at 11 a.m. on Monday titled “Back to school amid the COVID-19 pandemic: Balancing students’ right to education against public health.”
  • The American Hospital Association is hosting a webinar at 1 p.m. on Wednesday about advancing racial equity through public health approaches to community violence.
