As the spread of COVID-19 upends markets and roils businesses, Morning Consult economist John Leer will offer daily insights into how the pandemic is impacting consumer confidence around the globe.

As of Friday morning, the Morning Consult Index of Consumer Sentiment (ICS) is at 88.64, falling 0.6% since the stimulus bill passed the Senate, news broke that 3.3 million Americans had applied for unemployment benefits, and the stock market rebounded. So far in March, daily confidence has declined 25 out of 27 days. The U.S. ICS is down 8.18% from last week.

Morning Consult is publicly launching consumer confidences indices for four key global markets: Japan, Germany, the U.K., and France. Below is a preview to that data with links out to the indices.

 

 

Japan: As of Friday morning, the Morning Consult ICS in Japan is at 58.69, decreasing 1.0% from the day before. The Japan ICS is down 15.91% since January 1. SEE THE DATA

Germany: As of Friday morning, the Morning Consult ICS in Germany is 75.76, decreasing 0.8% from the day prior. It is down 22.45% since January 1. SEE THE DATA

United Kingdom: As of Friday morning, the Morning Consult ICS in the U.K. is 66.74, decreasing 1.4% from the day prior. Since January 1, the U.K. ICS has fallen 27.30%, the largest decline over that period of time among these five countries. SEE THE DATA
