  • The World Health Organization said it believes it is “rare” for asymptomatic COVID-19 carriers to spread the infection to others, putting estimates of transmission from individuals without symptoms at about 6 percent of the overall spread. While other health officials around the world have attributed challenges in containing the virus to transmission from such individuals, Maria Van Kerkhove, WHO’s technical lead on the coronavirus, said that many seemingly asymptomatic people have actually had either mild or unusual symptoms. • Nearly half of all states are not following guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for reporting probable COVID-19 cases and deaths, according to a Washington Post review of state compliance with the voluntary protocols. California, Florida, North Carolina and New York are among the 24 states that have not disclosed probable cases and deaths, leading many public health experts and government officials to conclude that the U.S. case and death totals — roughly 1.9 million and 109,000 as of yesterday, respectively — have been undercounted. • New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) said the state has hit its lowest rate of infection since the coronavirus pandemic began, with 1.2 percent of those residents who were tested yesterday testing positive for the virus. New York City’s rate of positive tests was slightly higher at 2 percent, but Cuomo said reopenings across the state would continue “because these numbers say we can.” (Bloomberg)
