Millennial parents are feeling the pressure to give their kids great gifts this holiday season, so they’re spending a lot more than nonparents, writes Morning Consult retail and e-commerce analyst Claire Tassin. Can you guess the share of millennial parents who said they’d spend $300 or more on gifts for the holidays?

A: 33% B: 42% C: 50% D: 64% E: 75%

Check out the answer at the bottom of today’s newsletter.

What’s Ahead

It’s officially December, which means I know some of you are already mentally checked out for the holiday season. Don’t worry, I’ve got some fun and festive data for you again today: This coming Saturday marks the return of SantaCon in cities around the world, a time-honored holiday tradition in which people dress up as Santa and participate in pub crawls. Like most in-person events, they were put on hold last year during the pandemic.

New York City’s SantaCon is particularly notorious. I may or may not be among the city’s Santas this year. What I can say definitively, though, is that I’m not the only one who’s considering it.

Roughly 1 in 3 U.S. adults said they are interested in attending a Santa crawl this year, according to a Morning Consult survey conducted Oct. 21-24. Of those interested, 61 percent said they already had plans to buy tickets as of October.

Interest is highest among millennials: Half of that generation said they might like to go this year. Gen Z adults and those who live in urban areas are also more interested in Santa crawls than the general public, two demographics with which I happen to associate. Men and Americans from high-income households are among the most likely to be crawling this winter as well.

Food and beverage brands: If any of these groups are among your target audience, you might want to consider getting involved in a SantaCon. Eighty-six percent of the interested group said they plan to eat holiday-themed food at a Santa crawl this year, and 4 in 5 said they plan to drink holiday-themed drinks.

Of interest on the earnings calendar this week are GameStop Corp. and Lululemon Athletic Inc.

Week in Review

  • Twitter Inc. Chief Executive Jack Dorsey, who co-founded the social media platform in 2006, stepped down from his role and was replaced by the company’s chief technology officer, Parag Agrawal.
  • Five days after Peloton Interactive Inc. sued Lululemon over a dispute surrounding Peloton’s new apparel line, Lululemon followed through on a threat to sue Peloton in return for making “copycat products.”
  • Online shoppers spent $10.7 billion on Cyber Monday, according to Adobe Analytics, down 1.4 percent from last year to mark the first time the company has ever reported a decrease in spending on a major shopping day since it started tracking e-commerce in 2012.
  • And although fewer Americans shopped online over Thanksgiving weekend than last year, the number of people who shopped in stores rose from 90 million to 105 million, according to the National Retail Federation.
  • BuzzFeed Inc. shareholders voted to take the digital media pioneer public through a special purpose acquisition company in a deal that raised less money than anticipated, but includes the completion of BuzzFeed’s $300 million acquisition of the sports and entertainment outlet Complex Networks. The votes were cast as all 61 union employees at BuzzFeed News staged a walkout over contract negotiations.

Stat of the Week

46%

That’s the share of holiday travelers who said they expect to use loyalty points or rewards to help balance their budgets as they look for ways to offset traveling expenses.
