Original Franchises Are Risky, but Worth the Gamble
In his latest memo, Morning Consult media and entertainment analyst Kevin Tran explains why releasing original franchises and licensing hit shows will be critical for major streaming services to increase their value to consumers this year. Morning Consult Brand Intelligence data, which tracks various brand health metrics for thousands of companies, shows the net value of Netflix and Disney+ dropped by around 10 points between January 2020 and December 2022.   • In the works for more than a decade, the Hulu series adaptation of Erik Larson’s “Devil in the White City,” which was set to be executive produced by Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese, is reportedly no longer moving forward at the Walt Disney Co.-owned streaming service, though ABC Signature plans to shop the project around to other networks.
