Today’s Top News

There was plenty of news yesterday from Netflix Inc., which shared its first-quarter earnings. These were some of the main takeaways from the call: 

  • Netflix added 1.75 million new net subscribers, missing Wall Street estimations of 2.3 million. (Yahoo Finance)
  • The streaming service announced that it would end shut down its DVD-by-mail rental service on Sept. 29. (The Associated Press)
  • The company pushed back plans to crack down on password sharing in the United States to sometime in July. (The Verge) 

    • About 1 in 10 U.S. adults said they do not subscribe to Netflix but use a password provided by someone they do not live with, per a Morning Consult survey conducted after the company announced last year its plans to end password sharing.

In non-Netflix news, the layoffs keep coming: 

  • The Walt Disney Co. will eliminate thousands of jobs next week across the TV, film, theme parks and corporate teams, according to people familiar with the plans. (Bloomberg)
  • Meta Platforms Inc. will conduct layoffs on Wednesday, according to an internal memo sent to employees which was reviewed by Vox, and 4,000 positions could be impacted, according to one source. (Vox)
